Loafing Blog for Week 7

Image
Participants on Discovery Channel's Naked and Afraid XL challenge attempt to survive together in harsh natural environments worldwide for 40 days. Photo credit: Discovery Channel  Historically, I have not had a hard time adjusting to leisure, having grown up in a surf culture that encouraged cutting class, smoking a joint, and surfing in sun-soaked waters for hours with your friends. Therefore, I was mildly amused in class when, upon receiving the noble assignment to loaf without guilt, I witnessed more than one of my classmates have a mild anxiety response to the assignment.  I was privileged to date someone in my 20s who taught me that "leisure is an art form", and while my load of responsibilities is much greater now,  I still love a good loaf. This week, I've been lying in the arms of my significant other with a great celebration of dopamine and serotonin within while watching the series Naked and Afraid XL produced by the Discovery Channel.  In the

Week 6: Resonance and Good Vibrations

Image
The 'Chaldni plate' demonstration here uses a cello bow and brass plates to demonstrate the organization of sand at different resonant frequencies. Photo credit:  https://sciencedemonstrations.fas.harvard.edu/presentations/chladni-plates Vibration It is a cool thing that wave motion and vibrations are the fundamental stuff behind matter, and "the formation of matter is just one of the tricks that waves can do."(Crowell, Vibrations ) I'm currently in a time where wave motions are creating beautiful things in my life. I'm riffing off some "very good" vibrations (ie. more pleasurable than painful) these days. That is not to state that there isn't some discord even within my good life. For example, our mental-emotional layers also emit vibrational waves, including fear and uncertainty, and I believe that I can sense some of those waves especially in people that I am close with. I don't believe vibrations are 'good' or 'b

Week 4: e=mc2 and more

Image
Sunbathing can provide a needed boost to Vitamin D levels, is immensely pleasurable, and is courtesy of e=mc2.  Honestly, before this class, I had not grappled with the immensity of e=mc2. It seems to me that the implications of this principle are revelatory, given that we would (do) live in a universe of matter that is atomically, explosively powerful. It's not how I experience my everyday reality, but hey, maybe discovering a lived reality of e=mc2 is part of the enlightened experience? The equation has made me consider my perspective on the power of matter. Thankfully, it offers a logical equation for the immense power of the millions of tonnes of hydrogen exploding each second in our Sun, offering us sunlight as a byproduct. The equation bridged the previously disconnected worlds of energy and matter, which spawned a revolution in science that I imagine has affected how I view the world. The Four Forces & Gravity Its an interesting point that the modern scientifi

Week 5: (A)Symmetry and CP Violation

( A )Symmetry & CP Violation In physics, a symmetry of a physical system is a physical or mathematical feature of the system (observed or intrinsic) that is preserved or remains unchanged under some transformation. This definition is according to our open source friends at Wikipedia, for which I am grateful, as I was having a hard time understanding the idea. In a CP violation, the conservation of parity, which states that “the laws of physics shouldn’t change when all the signs of a particle’s spatial coordinates are flipped (1),” didn't hold up in a kaon. They were discovered to be unique in that "the matter and anti-matter forms occasionally decay in slightly different modes (2)." This breakdown may be due to the prevalence of matter in the Universe, whereas a Universe that was 50-50 matter and anti-matter would not last long, as those elements would destroy one another (2). The discovery of CP violation was recognized with the 1980 Nobel Prize in physics, and open

Week 2: Reflections on Synchronicity and related ideas

Image
Forest Bathing and Qi Gong can connect us to a more interconnected reality (the forest),  which may lead to an increase in synchronistic events.  Shameless plug: Osmosis in Sonoma County is amazing (www.osmosis.com)  Synchronicity and related ideas Synchronicity is a fascinating phenomenon, and two aspects of this metaphysical idea interest me most. The first is whether the quality or content of my attention is influencing how much/little I experience the phenomenon of synchronicity, and second is how I translate the experience of synchronicity, in which I find Jung’s emphasis on archetypes relevant. I was in the forest recently doing Qi Gong, and had a deep experience with the sounding of a crow. The crow has representational meaning to me through the lens of Vedic astrology, where Crow is an earth-representative of the constricting planet Saturn. Sitting with this intensity for awhile, I then head the call of the sparrow, a light-hearted, high-octave call that called

Biography & Week 1

Me standing with Vaidya Vijay of Trivandrum, India at the Ayurvedic Center that truly changed my trajectory in life (2012). I've come to AIMC after a career in non-profit fundraising, including working with Community Foundation Sonoma County post-wildfires in the North Bay, where our Resilience Fund facilitated over $15M in direct relief aid to County agencies and residents. I was quite sick in my early 20's from a ruptured spleen, tropical parasites, and antibiotic overuse. Of course, Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Yoga, and meditation restored and rejuvenated my life, and my long-standing interest in practicing these systems has manifested in my AIMC enrollment. In my free time, I'm single and dating, maintaining and enjoying my home in the North Bay, surfing in our wild coast, and spending time with family and friends. Santa Teresa, the small beach town in Costa Rica where P-Time became my reality.  Week 1 Reflection: The Meaning of Time There was a
